Location: O'Niell's
Street: Central Ave and Washington
City/Town: Albuquerque
Phone: meyster1@comcast.net
Event Type: community, forum
Organized By: Nob Hill Main Street

Nob Hill Main Street will sponsor a forum to explore the future of Nob Hill's commercial district on Friday, July 16, at Noon. It will take place at O'Niell's on Central at Washington. O'Niell's will host a complimentary buffet.

Participants will explore the Nob Hill Highland Sector Plan of 2007; what it is intended to do and how it is being implemented. Discussion will be led by Phyllis Taylor of Sites SW who led the development of the plan and Juanita Garcia, Assistant Head of Zoning Enforcement, who managed development of the plan for the City and manages its implementation.

Main Street is an initiative of the National Trust for Historic Preservation that provides a community-driven methodology to revitalize older business districts.

Nob Hill Main Street is a locally created and controlled effort to use the tools that Main Street provides to foster actions that result in a future that benefits residents, merchants, property owners, and our entire community. Some of its long term goals are:

-Brand and promote Nob Hill on local and regional levels to make it a destination for residents and visitors. Create recurring events and special events that make Nob Hill a great place to live, work, and visit.

-Enhance the quality and function of the business district by developing long term solutions to infrastructure needs like parking and transportation, pedestrian safety, and walkability.

-Help merchants and property owners enhance the business district by preserving its unique architectural character and repurposing vacant or underutilized space.

-Make Nob Hill a sustainable community of significant economic, historic, and social value to the city and state.

The forum is open to all and should last slightly over an hour. You may direct questions to Gary Eyster at meyster1@comcast.net

Nob Hill Main Street in the New York Times and New Mexico Business Weekly

Last week, Governor Richardson came to Scalo's in Nob Hill and asked New Mexicans to spend $25 at 2 local stores this month. With the prevelance of local shops in Albuquerque, it is important to spend money there because the money stays in our communitiy and local economy.

I would also like to encourage folks to spend money in local shops, not only this month but year round. Local small business is a major part of our local economy and the strength of our local businesses translates to the health of our local economy. I am lucky to represent an area that consists of amazing local shops, restaurants, and other businesses in Nob Hill and the International District.

Gov. Richardson Asks New Mexicans to Shop Locally

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson on Thursday urged New Mexicans to spend $25 at each of two local stores this month, an initiative that could have a $27 million economic impact on the state in December.
Richardson, who spoke at a restaurant in Albuquerque's Nob Hill shopping area, said that for every $100 spent locally, $68 stays in that community. That compares to $43 remaining in the community for every $100 spent in national chain stores, he said.
Because small- and medium-sized businesses are prevalent in New Mexico, shopping locally would help the state's budget shortfall, Richardson said.
''This is a way we can pump tax money, gross receipts funds, into our state and at the same time make a difference and help our local businesses,'' he said.
While Albuquerque, Santa Fe and cities around the country have asked shoppers to spend their dollars at local stores, New Mexico's ''$25 2 Main Street'' campaign makes it one of few states -- alongside Vermont and Utah -- to offer a statewide push, said Stacy Mitchell, a senior researcher at the Institute for Local Self-Reliance.

Councilor Rey Garduño Featured on Duke City Fix

The Crosswalk Wars: Garduño Steps In

NOB HILL--City Councilor Rey Garduño has entered the fray of what might be called The Crosswalk Wars of Nob Hill. He is about to introduce a resolution in the City Council that would establish two more traffic signals, one at Central and Wellesley. and the other at Central and Morningside. A City Council resolution would be a way to out-flank the city administration which says that any more signals in Nob Hill are not warranted.

If ever a city street needed a crosswalk more than Nob Hill's Central Ave., I would be hard pressed to name it. It is one of the busiest streets for both vehicles and pedestrians in the entire state. Yet there is but one designated crosswalk of any kind between Richmond and Washington, a distance of almost exactly one mile. That crosswalk is the stoplight at Central and Carlisle.
